In the Community

We strongly believe that a Care Home should not be a place where residents are cut off from the outside world.

So The Uplands, its residents and staff are closely involved in many initiatives in and around Shrewsbury, opening the doors to individuals and groups from our local and wider community. This approach helps avoid introversion, and, particularly for those with limited mobility, provides valuable social interaction.

Not only have we built relationships with other local health and charitable organisations, but there are numerous other projects which we are delighted to support.

We have formed a close relationship with Shrewsbury Town Football Club and are proud to support their Shrewsbury Town in the Community development programme. It gives residents the opportunity to attend matches, and also runs Meadow Memories, an initiative designed to give dementia sufferers real pleasure through use of football memorabilia.

We also support various arts projects, including The Hive – the community arts project in Shrewsbury town centre – and Shrewsbury Youth Theatre (SYT)

SYT supports many budding young thespians, as well as providing opportunities for students to be involved with stage, lighting and costume design. The senior group consists of young people aged 13-25, and is the only student-governed youth theatre in the county.

Volunteers have been visiting The Uplands since we opened nearly 10 years ago, sometimes through national volunteering schemes, sometimes as part of schools’ projects, or as part of the outreach from our local church and faith communities. The role of these amazing volunteers sometimes involves helping staff with group activity sessions, sometimes it may just be having face-to-face chats with individual residents, or reading to them from a favourite book.

As well as providing practical help, the rapport built up with those we support is genuine and becomes an enrichening addition to the lives of all involved.

We don’t consider these volunteers as individuals popping in on an ad hoc basis; they are hugely important parts of our community within the home, and our close association with them only strengthens our tie with the wider community.

If you would like to volunteer here, do call us on 01743 282040 for more information.
