The Uplands Care Home with Nursing in Shrewsbury

About The Uplands Care Home

The Uplands Care Home with nursing is a purpose-built 81-bed care home located in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Our specialist team here provides nursing care, dementia nursing care, as well as short term rehabilitation care and accommodation which supports the diagnosis and treatment of some long term conditions.

Commended by the Gold Standards Framework recognised by the Department of Health for end of life care, we are nationally recognised as a quality provider of nursing and specialist dementia care. We help residents lead full and independent lives, encouraging them to continue their hobbies and interests, while offering up some new experiences, too. We adopt a person-centred approach so your loved one is treated with dignity and compassion for a home away from home.

Types of Care

Length of Stay

  • Short term rehabilitation care
  • Day care

The Uplands care home is managed by Mary Ann Ballesteros, who heads up a team of dedicated, experienced and highly qualified carers and nurses. Each resident will be assigned a Key Worker Care Assistant to help with their individual personal and recreational needs, along with a Named Nurse who will provide support with the resident’s nursing needs. We are closely supported by Shrewsbury GPs and Shropshire’s NHS multidisciplinary team, giving you and your loved ones peace of mind during their stay with us, along with aftercare should they return home.

The Uplands is split into four units – Dorrington and Meole which offer a total of 40 nursing beds for the care of people living with dementia and dementia related illnesses, and Gough and Cory which offer nursing care for 41 people with long-term conditions.

All bedrooms in these units include a personal en-suite bathroom, with some even featuring their own beautiful patio. There are also a number of interconnecting rooms for couples staying at the care home together. Each bedroom is fully furnished with an electric profiling nursing care bed, wall-mounted flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi internet access, nurse call system and private telephone. An iPad can also be made available for residents to use, along with PCs in the learning room, for which support can be provided to those wishing to learn more about computing and how to access the internet.

For relatives looking to stay overnight, a guest room can be made available in advance of the visit depending on the current COVID-19 status of the home – our team can advise on this at the point of enquiry.

With flexible visiting times and plenty of parking, we strive to make visits from family and friends as easy as possible, so they can focus on spending some quality time with their loved ones. Most visitors choose to pop by when the reception is open from 9am to 5pm, however we can facilitate visitations out of hours by prior arrangement. We understand how important an open line of communication is to reassure carers, family and friends and put their minds at ease, which is why they can telephone us at any time, day or night, to enquire about the wellbeing of their loved ones.

Facilities

Residents have access to their own communal day rooms where they can socialise, a hair and beauty salon which offers a range of treatments, and flourishing gardens where they can go for a stroll or put their green fingers to work! There is also a sensory room for residents living with dementia to safely explore and stimulate their senses, along with a quiet contemplation and prayer room designed for residents and their family as a peaceful space of solitude.

Our talented chef creates nutritious home cooked meals that are freshly prepared on the premises using locally purchased produce. There is a rolling menu plan covering an 8-week period which includes two main choices for each meal and varies according to seasonal availability of ingredients. This menu caters for special diets and personal preferences, and the residents are welcome to suggest changes at any time.

Activities

We strongly believe that a care home should not isolate residents from the outside world, which is why our ‘Oomph’ activities coordinators provide a programme of activities and trips specially developed to support those we care for, including bingo, baking, arts and crafts, line dancing, theatre trips and tea at local garden centres.

We take an active role in the local community, building close relationships with other local health and charitable organisations, arts projects, and development programmes. We welcome volunteers into our care home to interact with our residents by reading with them, taking part in group activities or having a one on one chat over a cup of tea. We believe that this support and socialisation is invaluable for our residents, particularly those with reduced mobility.
